3 Common Reasons Your Heater Keeps Blowing Its Fuse

A functional heating system is an essential feature of a comfortable, energy-efficient home, but if your furnace or heat pump keeps blowing a fuse, the interior space will likely encounter uneven, undesirable temperatures. It’s important to act quickly to determine the root cause of the problem and get it taken care of immediately. In this article, a professional heating and air duct sealing contractor shares the most common reason your heating system keeps blowing its fuse.

Overvoltage. A familiar factor in blown fuses, overvoltage can either occur chronically with persistent high voltages, sporadically with high resistive heating demands or randomly with occasional spikes and surges. It’s fairly easy to identify a blown fuse that was caused by chronic overvoltage, but the other two types can often go undetected because they only transpire temporarily.

Low airflow. In a heat pump system, reduced airflow can lead to many electrical issues, including blown fuses. From undersized ductwork and blowers to improper control installations, there are numerous reasons for a blower to stop operating effectively. This can also lead to overvoltages that blow the fuse.

Insufficient airflow is normally due to air filters with excessive dirt, dust and debris buildup. To ward off this issue, make sure that you clean and replace air filters regularly as well as perform repairs and maintenance when needed.

Water leaks. It’s not entirely uncommon for a water leak to occur in a furnace. This can be produced by an attached or nearby humidifier unit. If not taken care of in a timely manner, water leaks and moisture can severely damage your system. This is why it’s important to conduct HVAC inspections and tune-ups seasonally, so that professionals can find and address minor issues before they turn into big, costly problems.
