5 Signs Your Air Handler Is in Trouble

The air handler is the steel box that’s attached to your air conditioning system, and is normally found in your attic or closet. It ensures comfortable living conditions for its users by supplying them with conditioned air. Like any other machine, it will inevitably wear out over time. Keeping your air handler in good condition in order to keep cool and comfortable throughout the year may be necessary.

Read on for some of the most common signs that your air handler is in need of repairs.

Leaks from the condensate pan. Moisture or water beneath the air handler unit indicate that the condensate pan is leaking. The air conditioner generates a significant amount of condensation, which collects in the pan beneath the air handler.  Moisture fosters the formation of biological pollutants that can clog drains. From the outside, insects and pests can enter the line and clog it. This will lead to the pan overflowing, which will result in water damage.

Fan unit issues. The fan or blower in your air handler unit is responsible for distributing conditioned air throughout your home via the ductwork. If the fan begins to produce unusual noises or you’re unable to feel the air exiting your ducts, you’ve identified a problem with the fan. You can contact a trained commercial HVAC service professional to repair the fan and reclaim your home’s comfort.

Filthy AC blowers. Contaminants in the air can clog the filter and blowers with dirt or dust. Cleaning or changing your air filter once a month can improve airflow through your vents, while keeping the blowers clean enhances the quality of your indoor air.

Blower motor failure. If the blower motor isn’t working properly, then your air handler won’t work properly. This can be due to a number of factors, including a faulty relay, run capacitor, control board, blower wheel or the blower itself. When this happens, contact qualified service personnel who can assist in diagnosing and resolving this issue.

Reduced productivity. If you’ve been using your air handler for any length of time, you should know the general level of output that the system provides. A drop in output tends to indicate a problem of some kind with the system. This problem could be a leak in the ducts or an electrical issue. Either way, you should have a professional examine your cooling and heating systems to make sure that everything is operating properly.
