Common Air Purifier Terms

Familiarizing yourself with common air purifier terms can help you make informed decisions about indoor air quality and choose the right air purifier for your home or business. However, navigating the world of air purifiers can be overwhelming. In this post, Acker Heating & Cooling decodes the most common air purifier terms.

HEPA

A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is known for capturing particles of various sizes, from viruses to pollen, showcasing superior air filtration. As a key component in air purifiers, HEPA filters demonstrate exceptional potency in eliminating tiny airborne particles. Widely utilized in hospitals, schools, and public spaces for respiratory sensitivity control, HEPA filters are also crucial in minimizing airborne dust and allergens in workplaces and homes.

CADR

Clean air delivery rate (CADR) gauges an air purifier’s efficacy in supplying clean air, indicating its pollutant removal capability. The ideal CADR varies by region and is usually presented in cubic meters per hour (m3/h) or occasionally in cubic feet per minute (cfm). This metric considers factors such as particle size, removal percentage, and airflow volume, directly influencing an air purifier’s hourly cleansing capacity. Take note that higher CADR values signify greater air purification output.

ACH

Air changes per hour (ACH) tells you how often an air purifier can clean the total volume of air in a specific space within an hour. For instance, an ACH rating of 6 denotes complete air filtration six times hourly. For optimal indoor air quality, opt for an ACH of 5 to 6. Individuals with allergies or asthma can benefit from a higher rating of 6 to 8.

CFM

Cubic feet per minute (CFM) indicates the volume of air that moves through an air purifier. Considering this measurement is crucial in choosing an appropriate air purifier because a higher CFM signifies greater air purification potential. Note that CFM can be influenced by factors like fan speeds, insulation, room airflow, furniture and airborne pollutants.
