Do’s & Don’ts of Using a Heat Pump in Summer

Summer has arrived, and it is time to turn to your heat pump to stay cool. While heat pumps are more energy-efficient than ever, some homeowners spend too much to run their equipment without realizing it. To avoid this, a residential and commercial HVAC expert has put together some do’s and don’ts of using a heat pump during the summer months.

Do’s

  • Make use of split timers. Most split and ducted systems have timer functions that allow users to control when their unit turns on and off. Only set this up to turn on when needed. When going to bed, make sure to activate the sleep timer. This function stops your unit from running all night long.
  • Keep a constant temperature. Setting your heat pump at an extremely low temperature only forces it to work harder and longer to reach the desired temperature. When using COOL mode in the summer, set the temperature at 75-78 degrees and do not change it during operation.

Don’ts

  • Use AUTO mode. According to an air conditioning specialist, many people incorrectly assume that AUTO mode on heat pumps is the most efficient setting. But if you use it, you run the risk of unnecessarily switching between heating and cooling. Your heat pump runs most efficiently in warmer weather when set to COOL mode.
  • Use the lowest fan speed. Heat pumps tend to work better when set to a higher fan speed. While high fan speeds produce more ambient noise, it is not something you will likely notice. Use the highest fan speed that is comfortable for you, and then key in your preferred temperature setting.
