The local climate plays the most significant role in determining your heating and cooling needs. This is the reason why some types of HVAC systems are more popular than others across the United States. In this article, Acker Heating & Cooling, a residential and commercial HVAC expert, shares a brief overview of how HVAC systems differ by region.
- Northeast. The Northeast is among the last proponents of oil heating. In fact, almost 30 percent of residential homes here still depend on oil furnaces, while this percentage is less than four percent in other regions. Moreover, about 60 percent of air conditioners are basic window or wall-mounted units, while central air systems dominate other regions.
- Midwest. Similar to the Northeast, the Midwest has frigid winters and humid summers. However, natural gas is the predominant heating fuel due to newer construction and a solid transportation infrastructure. Also, more than 80 percent of homes in the Midwest have air conditioning, though it’s not strictly necessary.
- South. The air source heat pump is an ideal choice for the coastal south, where summers are warm and humid and winters are mild. Air conditioning and dehumidifying systems are also present in just about every home in the South, and 85 percent of them are central air units. Despite this fact, less than 40 percent have a programmable thermostat.
- Southwest. In the desert Southwest, air conditioning is a vital component. Evaporative coolers are still commonplace in this region because of the extremely arid environment. Surprisingly, heating isn’t totally neglected in the Southwest, where desert nights can get cold. Natural gas is the predominant heating source in this case.
- West. Much of the West gets by without air conditioning thanks to cool ocean breezes and high altitudes. Natural gas is the heating fuel of choice, though electricity has seen a small increase as affordable electrical costs have driven the acquisition of heat pump systems in mild coastal areas.
