How To Choose the Right HVAC Filter

Imagine your HVAC system as the lungs of your home, breathing in and out to keep your environment comfortable and healthy. The key to maintaining its peak performance lies in choosing the right filter. With so many options available, making your selection can feel overwhelming. Acker Heating & Cooling explains what you need to know.

Understanding MERV Ratings

One of the first steps in choosing the right HVAC filter is understanding MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ratings. MERV ratings range from 1 to 16 for residential purposes, indicating a filter’s ability to capture airborne particles. Lower MERV ratings mean fewer pollutants are captured, while higher MERV ratings (between 7 and 12 for most homes) signify better filtration. Opting for filters with a MERV rating that balances air flow with filtration efficiency is key, especially during the months of the year when dust and pollen are at its highest.

Types of HVAC Filters

  • Fiberglass Air Filters. Fiberglass air filters, with MERV ratings of 1-4, are the most cost-effective option. However, they capture the least amount of indoor air pollutants. These filters are suitable for preventing large particles from damaging your HVAC system but provide minimal improvement to air quality.
  • Pleated Air Filters. A step above fiberglass, pleated air filters (MERV 6-13) offer better pollutant capture rates, trapping dust, pollen, and mold spores more effectively. Given the higher air quality demands in homes, especially during high pollen seasons, pleated filters represent a more suitable option for balancing efficiency and air purification.
  • Electrostatic Air Filters. For households with pets, smokers, or high dust levels, electrostatic air filters (MERV 6-8) may be ideal. These filters use self-charging fibers to attract and hold onto particulates. Disposable and reusable options offer flexibility for residents interested in reducing waste and long-term costs.
  • High-Efficiency Air Filters. With MERV ratings of 9-16, high-efficiency air filters offer the best residential protection against pollutants, including those as small as virus carriers. Although perfect for ensuring the cleanest indoor air, their denser material can restrict airflow, potentially increasing utility bills and stressing HVAC systems without adequate capacity.
