How to Cool a Windowless Room

Most people associate windows with daylighting, cooling and air circulation. However, in certain circumstances, some rooms don’t have space for windows due to their location in the home or the personal preferences of the homeowner. With the summer months in full swing, cooling and heating systems experts state that rooms without windows are difficult to be in on a hot summer day. As such, one may not be able to enjoy their time in that space, leaving it underutilized.

Keep in mind that a room without windows will be difficult to cool down without a central air conditioning unit for numerous reasons, the main one being a lack of ventilation and airflow. However, you shouldn’t worry, as it isn’t impossible to cool a room without windows. You just need to be smarter in finding ways to do so.

In today’s blog post, Acker Heating & Cooling, the leading residential and commercial HVAC installation company in your area, shares some creative ways to cool a windowless room.

Install a quality ceiling fan. One simple trick that’s used around the world to cool windowless rooms is installing a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan draws air up from the floor and moves it around the living space, creating a cooling sensation for everyone inside. If you’re in a hot room, there will be a stagnant layer of heat surrounding your body, and the ceiling fan pulls it upward, away from you, allowing your body to feel fresher and cooler. If your aim in cooling the room is to make the people inside it more comfortable, then installing a quality ceiling fan will definitely do the trick without breaking the bank.

Install a through-the-wall air conditioner. Another great option to consider is a through-the-wall air conditioner. This air conditioning system works similar to a window unit, but it’s installed on the wall, instead of being placed in the window. However, this still needs to be thought out carefully, since the unit must be placed on an exterior wall of the building to allow for proper ventilation to the outside.

These air conditioning units are far more efficient than central air conditioning units, and the room will stay cooler because it has no windows. This is a case of a disadvantage being used to one’s advantage. In fact, it will take less energy to cool down a windowless room than one with a window when insulation and daylighting are taken into account.

This air conditioner is installed directly into the wall, and this design is energy efficient since it inherently prevents drafts. As such, it’s a secure unit, making this a surefire solution to bringing cooling and comfort to a windowless room.

Use two fans to circulate and remove hot air. It’s common knowledge that hot air rises, no matter what space you’re in. This problem is even more evident in windowless rooms since they can have very still air. If you blow one fan upward and the other toward the door, this will help drive the hot air trapped near the ceiling toward your door. This is another great way to cool your room.

Also, cooling and heating systems experts say that free-standing fans or box fans will have the same effect on those inside as a ceiling fan. This is because the air circulation will help move the stagnant air out of the room and enable the body to release heat, keeping you cooler and more comfortable.

Shut off appliances and lights. Most appliances and lights emit heat, and the more energy a device uses, the more intense the heat it emits. If there are a lot of appliances and lights in the windowless room in which you’re staying, make sure to turn off the ones you aren’t using. Granted, it’s usually easier to leave these appliances on, but this can make your room very hot, and every action counts when you want to make your room feel cooler. Make it a habit to turn off everything in the room when you leave, and shut off appliances that you don’t use for comfort and energy efficiency as well.

Close your doors. When you shut the door, you isolate the space. This helps you if you have a windowless room since the room will stay cooler if the door is closed and the lights are out. If you leave the door open, heat and light from the other rooms will find their way into your room and make it feel warmer. Keep the door closed until you’re ready to exit the room.

Extend your current HVAC system. If you have a central air conditioning unit at home, then you don’t need a through-the-wall AC unit. You can opt for another, simpler solution if you have pre-existing ducts and vents set up in this space. If you can extend your current HVAC system to reach your windowless room, then you’ll have no trouble cooling it down.

Use a ductless air conditioning unit. A ductless air conditioning unit grants you a lot of convenience and energy efficiency. It provides the convenience of a central cooling system without the hassle of ducts. All you need to do is install an outdoor and an indoor unit that are connected with refrigerant tubing and electrical wiring. You can also opt to mount the indoor unit to your wall, but it will need to be installed on an exterior wall so it can be connected to the outdoor unit.

Purchase a portable air conditioning unit. While this isn’t one of the most effective solutions to cooling a windowless room, it’s still one worth considering. Remember that the portable air conditioning unit still needs to be vented outdoors. If your room has an exterior wall, then you can drill a hole to install a hose that leads outside, making your portable AC unit effective. Otherwise, you might need to run the hose through another room.
