Properly Dealing With HVAC Emergencies

Emergencies can happen at any time, be they accidents or disasters or have some other natural or man-made cause. You’re likely to have your fair share of home emergencies as well, such as a problem with your system’s refrigerant or ventilation system. With these types of emergencies, it’s usually best to call in a trusted residential and commercial HVAC technician to address the problem as soon as possible.

However, there are some HVAC emergencies that go beyond the usual refrigerant leaks. These are problems that should be repaired immediately or you’ll be forced to pay more later on. Here are some of them:

Gas leaks. Natural gas is a common source of energy for heating and cooking needs in virtually every home in the country. Even though it’s safe in most cases, gas can still leak and result in life-threatening respiratory problems and even dangerous explosions.

Natural gas can’t be seen with the naked eye, but it can be detected in other ways. One strong indication is hearing a hissing sound coming from the gas lines of your equipment and smelling a rotten egg or sulfuric odor. If you notice either of these inside your home, vacate the property and contact a trusted HVAC contractor immediately. You may also want to call emergency services.

Clogged lines. Air conditioning systems usually have drain lines built in to drain off water from the evaporator coil. However, water can accumulate from the condensation that naturally occurs during the air conditioning process. These drain lines can become clogged or blocked at times, causing water to back up into or around your system. This can mean serious water damage, especially if the problem wasn’t addressed for a long time. Make sure to have this addressed by a trusted technician to avoid more costly repairs later on.

System failure. Complete system failure also counts as an HVAC emergency, especially if the system fails when extreme temperatures occur. During the winter, for instance, a system that doesn’t heat properly will result in an excessively-cold interior, which isn’t very comfortable for your home’s inhabitants. Health and wellness become affected as well, which is why it should be addressed immediately.
