Tips on How to Improve Airflow in Your Building

As a business owner, it’s crucial that you ensure your employees are healthy and your clients are comfortable. As such, you have to prioritize good indoor air quality. Office spaces are prone to harmful airborne chemicals that come from carpeting, printed materials, photocopy machines and other materials and substances. If your HVAC system is unable to trap these chemicals, it can affect the health of the people inside your building.

In today’s post, professional HVAC company Acker Heating & Cooling shares some tips on how to improve airflow in your business space.

Make sure the vents aren’t blocked. Have you noticed that your office has hot and cold spots or the temperature is inconsistent? This is likely caused by employees who are dealing with their discomfort by blocking or closing off the air conditioning registers and vents. However, by doing this, they change the way the air flows through the system, which prevents it from properly circulating through the building. For this reason, you need to make sure all vents and registers are open and not obstructed by furniture or other items.

Replace the air filters regularly. The air conditioning system has filters that remove dust and debris from the air to prevent them from entering the air conditioner and wreaking havoc on its parts. If they’re not regularly replaced, the filters will get clogged and prevent air from entering the system. This will cause airflow problems and make it hard for your air conditioning unit to cool your space. Therefore, you must replace your filters regularly. The frequency will depend on your equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep your air ducts in great shape. If your air conditioning ducts are accessible, you may want to consider having a maintenance person check them out. If they’re not maintained properly, the ducts can become clogged with dust or develop holes or cracks where conditioned air can escape. However, if they’re located inside walls or crawl spaces, a professional HVAC technician should inspect them and perform the necessary repair and maintenance services. To ensure your air ducts are in great shape at all times, you should schedule regular service visits.

Check the size of your unit. Bigger isn’t always better, and an oversized air conditioning unit is proof. An oversized unit can be the culprit if your indoor air quality is poor and is unable to provide consistent comfort. It may also turn on and off continuously and never operate long enough to remove humidity from the air. Thus, consult your HVAC technician to determine the best size for your office space’s air conditioning equipment.
