Understanding the Usual Heat Pump False Alarms

Similar to other appliances, heat pumps sometimes have trouble working correctly. If you’re a new heat pump owner, it’s not uncommon to mistake operational differences for actual problems. In this post, an HVAC repair and maintenance expert enlightens you further about these misconceptions.

Remember that knowing about common heat pump issues can help you determine whether you need to call a professional or if it’s simply a false alarm. Here’s how you can easily determine actual heat pump issues.

The heat pump isn’t cooling your rooms. If the air from your vents isn’t cool, this is a strong indication that your equipment needs to be cleaned. Experts note that a broken reversing valve and low refrigerant charge can also keep your heat pump from producing cool air. It would also be a good idea to check your thermostat to make sure the settings are correct.

The heat pump won’t turn on. If this occurs and you can hear a faint clicking noise coming from the equipment, it could be that there’s a problem with the starter capacitor. This part of your heat pump transmits an electrical charge that turns on the motor. In some cases, heat pumps won’t operate due to a tripped breaker. You’ll have to contact an HVAC professional to ensure good indoor air quality.

Slower, quieter heating. Although having quieter heating may sound more like a benefit than a disadvantage, this can be alarming for homeowners who’ve used a furnace for a long time, as furnaces are a lot louder. During its heating cycle, a heat pump will deliver heat slowly and evenly, which is a stark contrast to the typical intense flurry of air that furnaces produce.
