Uneven Heating in Homes: What Are the Common Causes?

You want your HVAC system to stay in top condition, especially on the coldest days of the year. If you’re not operating or taking care of your equipment properly, your comfort will suffer. This is just one of many reasons it pays to invest in routine heating and air conditioning tune-ups.

Here are some of the most common causes of uneven heating in homes.

Drafty rooms. Drafts may be what’s making it difficult to heat some rooms in your house. They can originate from leaky windows, electrical outlets and pipes. You can determine if any are present by turning off your HVAC equipment and lighting a candle. Hold the candle up to electrical outlets, closed windows and areas where pipes meet walls. If the flame quivers, this means that conditioned or heated air is escaping from your space. Sometimes, caulking and weatherstripping are enough to fix the issue. However, if the problem concerns your insulation, you’ll need to contact the professionals.

Dirty air filter. Regular air filter changes are essential to the efficiency of cooling and heating systems. Over time, dirt, dust and other debris can accumulate in HVAC filters. When not replaced, the filters will clog and affect the performance of your equipment. Dirty air filters can also compromise your indoor air quality and contribute to allergy and asthma attacks. Depending on the type of air filter you have and your needs, you may need to replace it every one to three months.

Blocked vents. Another common culprit behind uneven room temperatures is clogged vents. Check if there’s anything obstructing your HVAC vents, like furniture and decor. It’s also possible that you might have inadvertently covered the vents with a rug, furniture or curtains. Keep in mind that vents need sufficient room to circulate air properly within your spaces.
