What Should You Look For in an HVAC Technician?

When your heating and cooling equipment needs repaired or replaced, you must hire a skilled professional. The right contractor will provide quality results and even share tips on how to extend the life of your system. Also, a properly-installed and -maintained HVAC system is less likely to experience problems.

Here are characteristics you should look for in a residential or commercial HVAC technician.

Licensing. The HVAC contractor you hire may be required to carry a license, depending on your location. States usually require these companies to pass exams and technical HVAC training. You can learn more about your state’s licensing requirements and find out if your contractor is licensed by checking the websites of the Contractor’s License Reference Site and National Contractors.

Bonding and insurance. A contract license surety bond is useful in case something goes wrong during your air conditioning replacement or repair. Bonding may be necessary for a contractor to obtain a license, so confirm this with your local authorities. The amount of the bond depends on your local requirements. You also want to make sure that any prospective HVAC technicians have workers’ compensation insurance. This is essential in case a worker experiences an injury while working in your home or building.

Credentials. Along with a license and insurance, your HVAC technician must also have the necessary permits to complete the job. Look up your prospective HVAC contractor and check to see if they have experience with the repair, maintenance and replacement of your equipment. Doing so will help prevent miscommunications between both parties, as well as technical issues.

A written contract. A verbal agreement isn’t always reliable, so be sure that all quotes and proposals are outlined in official writing, which you can later use as a reference. Your contract should include a detailed description of the job and the timeline of the work to be performed, as well as a complete breakdown of all costs, payment due dates and the project completion date.
