What to Check on Your HVAC System Before Calling the Pros

Calling your trusted local HVAC technician whenever your heating or cooling system isn’t working properly is always ideal . Before you do so, however, you should understand  some things about troubleshooting. Here Acker Heating & Cooling, your local provider of HVAC and indoor air quality products and services, shares the things to check on your unit before scheduling a service appointment.

Lack of heating or cooling. If  your HVAC unit isn’t working, first check if it’s turned on. If it’s not, the circuit breaker might’ve tripped, which means you’ll need to reset it. If not, examine the thermostat and see if it’s on the correct setting. Sometimes, the indoor unit will work just fine even if the outdoor unit isn’t. For this issue, turn the thermostat controls off for one to three  hours and wait to see if the whole system resets itself. If you’re using a furnace, check if the shut-off valve was switched off by mistake.

Lack of airflow. If your HVAC unit has turned on but isn’t blowing warm or cold air, the air filters could already be dirty, which means you need to replace them right away. Depending on your home’s indoor environment and heating or cooling usage, these may require replacement as often as once a month. Check the ducts as well: these require air duct sealing and cleaning every two to five years.

Increasing energy bills. If you notice your energy bills have been on the rise over the past few months, the problem could be with your heating and cooling system. Check if the thermostat is at a much higher or lower setting than it should be. This will lead to wasted energy because the system has to work twice as hard to maintain indoor comfort. Also, get in touch with your utility company and ask if they ‘ve raised their electricity rates.

If none of the troubleshooting methods covered above help solve your HVAC problem, call Acker Heating & Cooling as soon as possible. We specialize in repair and maintenance work on HVAC systems as well as new system installation projects. Call (706) 425-8774 or fill out our contact form to schedule a service appointment.
